If your business is registered under GST, two returns dominate your calendar: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. They serve different purposes, and understanding the difference makes filing far less stressful.
GSTR-1: your outward supplies
GSTR-1 is a detailed statement of your outward supplies — essentially, your sales invoices for the period. It's what flows into your customers' GSTR-2B and enables their input tax credit, so accuracy here directly affects your buyers.
GSTR-3B: your summary and payment
GSTR-3B is a summary return where you declare your total outward supplies, claim eligible input tax credit, and pay the net tax due. It's less line-by-line than GSTR-1 but it's where the actual tax settlement happens.
How they fit together
- GSTR-1 = detailed outward supplies (your sales)
- GSTR-3B = summary + input tax credit + payment
- Both should reconcile with your books — and with GSTR-2B for purchases
The cleanest way to file is to have both returns built directly from the same set of books, rather than re-entered by hand. SoarLedger assembles GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B in the GSTN schema from your recorded transactions, so the two returns — and your books — stay consistent.
Note: due dates and applicability vary by turnover and scheme (for example, monthly vs QRMP). Always confirm the dates that apply to your registration.
